Advocating For Journalism
Rickey is a champion of independent news media because she believes that a well-informed citizenry is the bedrock of democracy. Her TEDx talk "The Future Of News Is In Our Hands" advocates for sustainable news business models. Rickey serves on the board of the Atlanta Press Club and has written on press freedoms in the US and Europe. A passionate advocate for local news and its vital role in American communities, she is a top fundraiser for public television and radio in her home state of Georgia.
Rickey also takes her advocacy for media and democracy internationally. In 2020, she was selected as one of 21 prestigious Young Leaders of the French-American Foundation and participated in the Future of Democracy working group of the German Marshall Fund. Rickey was invited to travel with the U.S. Department of State to study Tamil culture and politics in Sri Lanka and India, and with the Middle East Travel Seminar in Jordan, Egypt, Israel and Greece. She serves as a Trustee of the Georgia Council for International Visitors.
In 2018, Rickey received a grant to study media freedoms in Hungary and Serbia and was asked to present her findings at the Marshall Seminar on the Frontier of Democracy in Kyiv. The following year, she was invited to travel through Ukraine observing propaganda and civic engagement during the 2019 presidential election. Rickey was named most influential “40 Under 40” by the Atlanta Business Chronicle (2015) and Georgia Trend (2016).
"Her projects connect journalists and shore up press freedoms in places where they have come under attack."
